Solvay Chemicals, Inc. - About Us

Soda ash

In 1863, Ernest Solvay patented a new soda ash manufacturing process and founded what was then known as Solvay & Cie in Brussels. Solvay became a major figure in the European chemical industry, and played a role in the overall advancement of science and technology.

In the 1970s, Solvay established Interox America in Houston, Texas. Since then, the opportunities for product development and market growth have evolved and expanded. Solvay Chemicals, Inc. was formed in 2003, combining Solvay Interox and Solvay Minerals; Solvay Fluorides, LLC, was acquired as a wholly owned subsidiary.

While dedicated to the NAFTA marketplace, Solvay Chemicals and Solvay Fluorides bring resources to this continent from far beyond its borders. We are a member of the Solvay Group, an international industrial Group active in chemistry. Solvay's history goes back more than 140 years. Its companies employ some 19,000 people in 50 countries. Solvay offers a broad range of products and solutions that contribute to improving the quality of life.

Sustainable development and the Responsible Care® Initiative have always been inherent in the Solvay philosophy. While today’s world is markedly different from that inhabited by Ernest Solvay, Solvay Chemicals continues to encompass the best in both philosophy and pragmatism, with customer service, scope of product, variety of markets, diversified plant sites across the United States and Mexico, and the support of a global Solvay network.
