Solvay Fluorides, LLC, a subsidiary of Solvay Chemicals, Inc. has facilities located in Alorton, Illinois. Acquired by Solvay in 2000, the Alorton facility processes anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF) that it receives from its affiliate Solvay Fluor Mexico. From this HF, the plant makes various aqueous HF solutions and other inorganic fluoride compounds. The Alorton plant also serves as a shipping point for anhydrous HF to truck customers in the central and eastern US, primarily for use as a catalyst in petroleum refining.
Hydrofluoric acid solutions are used as a polishing agent in the manufacture of hollow or crystal glass, as a pickling agent for stainless steel and in certain industrial compounds. Products are available in drum or bulk packaging, and are shipped via truck.
