Solvay Chemicals’ mine in Green River, Wyoming, one of the most technologically advanced in the world, produces trona, a mineral with a wide range of uses. A powerful and effective product for use in air pollution control, trona has been mined for decades from the world’s largest and purest deposit in Green River, which holds over 50 billion tons of trona. For over twenty years, trona has been used to reduce acid gas emissions in industries ranging from electric power generation to cement manufacturing.
Soda ash, which is refined from trona, is the one of the most important components in glass manufacturing. Sodium bicarbonate, another product derived from trona, has applications in pharmaceuticals, in dairy cattle feed as a rumen buffer to increase productivity, and in air pollution control. Other sodium-based products are used in food applications and as colorants, conditioners and dentifrices; in effervescents, pharmaceuticals and photographic chemicals; and in carpet deodorizers, kitty litter and cleaning compounds.

Solvay Chemicals is one of the largest producers of peroxygen chemicals in North America. Hydrogen peroxide is used in bleaching applications in the pulp & paper industry, in textile and chemicals industries, and in the treatment of wastewater. High purity hydrogen peroxide is used by the semiconductor, electronics and aerospace industries in their production processes. Sodium percarbonate and sodium perborate are solid peroxygen products used in detergents, home care products and food processing. Peracetic acid is used in water treatment and disinfecting applications.

Fluorine-based Products
Solvay Chemicals' subsidiary, Solvay Fluorides, LLC, produces and distributes fluorine-based products such as brazing flux used in the manufacture of automotive heat exchangers, and high purity hydrofluoric acid, used by the semiconductor industry for the cleaning and etching of silicon wafers. Applications for other Solvay Fluorides products include uses such as contrasting agents in ultrasound examinations, and as pharma-aerosols, an ozone-friendly solution to CFC-based metered-dose inhalers.
Solvay Chemicals also offers several high performance chemicals from its affiliate in Mexico. Solvay Fluor Mexico, located in Ciudad Juarez, manufactures ammonium bifluoride for the glass and metallurgical industries, and anhydrous hydrofluoric acid for stainless steel and other metal processing applications, petroleum alkylation and the manufacture of fluoro-derivatives.
