In 2001, Solvay Chemicals began production of BICAR™ sodium bicarbonate at its Parachute, Colorado facility.
With a wide variety of applications, sodium bicarbonate is used every day in the food we eat and products we use. Industrial applications utilize sodium bicarbonate as a reactive carbonate or sodium source and as a pH buffer. It is used in environmental applications such as air pollution control, acid neutralization, and water treatment. A specialized Coarse Granular product is used in soda blasting to clean surfaces. Industries such as leather tanning, pulp & paper, plastic, oil well drilling and textile processing also utilize sodium bicarbonate, and swimming pool applications use sodium bicarbonate to provide pH adjustment.
Food Grade sodium bicarbonate is used in dairy cattle as a rumen buffer to increase feed intake and improve productivity. Other applications include beef cattle, poultry and swine. It is also used in pharmaceuticals, photographic chemicals, dentifrices, effervescents, carpet deodorizers, kitty litter and cleaning compounds.
At Solvay Chemicals, Inc., we understand the real world impact of our commitment to food safety. Our Parachute facility has achieved certification to the ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System Standard. We stand alone as the first North American sodium bicarbonate production facility to reach this milestone.
The ISO 22000 quality management system ensures that production is governed by the principles of a Hazards Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) program and the FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). BICAR Sodium Bicarbonate Food Grade (FCC/USP) products are used as leavening agents for baked goods, cereals, pancake mixes and self rising flours, and are used in the manufacture of food colorants and effervescent drinks.
BICAR Sodium Bicarbonate is also manufactured in cGMP for the excipients and API market, and meets the specifications of the U.S. Pharmacopeia.
Solvay Chemicals is a member of the global Solvay Group, the world’s largest producer of sodium bicarbonate.
